Carlos Zavala
Director of Coaching Education & Player Development
YOUTH
Carlos Zavala is a product of the California Youth Soccer Association South (CYSAS) where he spent all of his youth soccer years under coaches like Clyde Best and Norm Jackson. He started playing soccer at a very early age for some of the top teams/clubs in the Southern California area. Carlos attended Saddleback High School (’84-‘88 – Santa Ana, CA) where he lettered twice in Football (Junior-Senior) and was a four-year letterman in soccer.
COLLEGE
Carlos attended Cal State Los Angeles (NCAA Div. I – Kinesiology '92). He played four years at CSLA under Leonardo Cuellar as a head coach, who is now with the Mexican Women National Team.
PROFESSIONAL
Carlos turned pro in 1992 when he signed with Toluca F.C. of the Mexican First Division. After several years of international professional soccer, Carlos came back to the U.S. to continue his professional career playing for some of the best outdoor and indoor soccer teams. He was an NPSL (MISL) All-Star Selection 1996 when he played for Tampa Bay, and again in 2001 when he played for the Buffalo Blizzard. Carlos’ successful career is decorated with 3 A-League professional championships (1998, 2000, 2001), and one U.S. Open Cup championship in 1999 when the Rochester Rhinos defeated the Colorado Rapids 2-0. After a 10-year successful soccer career, Carlos participated in well over 550 official professional games, once playing in the World Club (Intercontinental) Futsal Championships in Europe.
COACHING
Carlos started coaching as a volunteer assistant coach at the age of 18. Throughout his collegiate and professional career, Carlos volunteered his spare time to help out with individual and small group private training, summer camps, winter programs, and team training (CA, AZ, FL, MI, NY, MO). He holds the professional USSF ‘B’ License, the National Youth License, along with having a vast international soccer experience in Latin American and European countries. He was a Director of Coaching Education and Player Development in Rochester, NY, before becoming the ZYSA DoC in 2003.
MAJOR RECOGNITIONS & AWARDS
Carlos received the Community Service Award in 2001, presented in recognition of outstanding service, community involvement, and commitment to the Rochester, NY community. He also received the Team Leadership Award in 2002 by the successful Rochester Rhinos franchise, which is presented to the player who best exemplifies leadership, dedication, and commitment to their team sport and city.
FAMILY TIES
“Chino” Zavala, Carlos’ father, played for C.D. Toluca from 1959-1973. “Chino” won two LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS (1967 & 1968), two CHAMPIONS OF CHAMPIONS TITLES (1967 & 1968), and also the CONCACAF CHAMPIONSHIP in 1968. Carlos’ wife, Jesseka, played for Cal State Chico (NCAA Div. II), and semi-professionally for the Sacramento Storm.
McKinley Jones III began playing at the very young age of four in
Indianapolis,
Indiana. He has played for many teams over the years with the most notable ones being Indy Inferno, Carmel United Inferno, and Dynamo FC ’84. While Playing at Dynamo FC, McKinley had the opportunity to play for and learn from Brian Jaworski, who in May 2003, was named Aflac National Assistant Coach of the Year in recognition of his hard-work and dedication to the
DePauw
University (NCAA Division III) men's soccer program. McKinley attended
Brebeuf
Jesuit
Preparatory School before transferring to Cardinal Ritter (graduated 2002) in the spring of 2001. While in high school, McKinley accumulated 60 goals and 20 assists. During his senior year of high school, McKinley was team captain, MVP, and scored 42 goals, which is still the school record for goals in a season at Cardinal Ritter. He was also 2nd in the state for most goals and points (42 goals, 96 points) and was also named and nominated for All-City, All-County and District teams over a four year period.
College
McKinley attended
Saint Joseph's College (NCAA Division II School) in
Rensselaer,
Indiana. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in May 2006. He played four years of college soccer for the Pumas where he received athletic and academic scholarships. During his college career, McKinley tallied 23 goals and 5 assists, which puts him 5th all-time on
St. Joseph’s scoring list for most points in a career. He also was once named team MVP (2003), Findlay Oilers All-Tournament Team (2003), and Great Lakes Valley Conference Academic All-Conference selection in 2004 and 2005.
Coaching
McKinley began coaching at ZYSA in 2006 while still attending college. He first began coaching while doing an internship in
London,
England, with a group of middle school students from
Southbank
International
School. While at ZYSA, McKinley has coached a variety of teams but currently coaches the U14 Girls Select team. He has also coached at the high school level. McKinley has been an Assistant Coach the last two years for
Brownsburg
High School (2006) and
Zionsville
Community
High School (2007) for their respective boy’s varsity soccer teams. McKinley currently holds the USSF National D License and is seeking his National C and National Youth licenses.
